Kansas Jayhawks fire head coach Charlie Weis

Kansas University has fired Jayhawks football team head coach Charlie Weis, after he won only one Big 12 game during his tenure, reports ESPN.

Weis, in the third year of a five-year contract, was being paid $2.5 million a year. He will receive the full $7 million-plus still owed him, according to the Lawrence Journal-World.

Defensive coordinator Clint Bowen will take over as interim head coach, said athletic director Sheahon Zenger. Bowen grew up in Lawrence, played linebacker for the Jayhawks in the early 1990s, and has been an assistant coach at Kansas since 1998.

“I normally do not favor changing coaches mid-season,” said Zenger in a statement. “But I believe we have talented coaches and players in this program, and I think this decision gives our players the best chance to begin making progress right away.”

At Kansas, Weis went 6-22, winning one of 19 conference games. His only Big 12 victory came year against West Virginia.

Only 36,904 fans attended the Texas game on Saturday, even after Weis had pleaded with fans to fill Memorial Stadium. Texas defeated the Jayhawks 23-0.

On Sunday, Kansas announced it was terminating Weis.

Weis is the second coach in a row Kansas has dismissed before the end of his contract. He replaced Turner Gill, who was released after the 2011 season.

Coming in behind Gill, who had a 2-10 season in 2011, Weis immediately cleaned house, running 29 players off the team. The drastic move drained much of the depth and talent from a program already hurting for both.

“I miscalculated the impact of when I threw 29 guys off the team the first year I was there,” said Weis this summer.

Weis had an offensive coordinator background, yet under his leadership, the Jayhawks struggled on offense. Kansas ranked last in the Big 12 scoring in 2012 and 2013, and currently is in last place with a per-game average of 15.3 points.

“KU alumni, students, fans and supporters expect that Kansas Football will match the other areas in which we excel as a university,” said KU chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little. “After consulting with Dr. Zenger, I am in agreement that it is time for new leadership of our football program.”
