Fifteen people wounded in Miami nightclub shooting

Witnesses said over 100 shots were fired at a Miami nightclub early Sunday morning, leaving 15 children and young people injured inside and outside the venue.

Gunfire erupted at a Miami nightclub early Sunday morning, injuring 15 children and young adults, reports CBS News.

The shooting sent terrified patrons scrambling from The Spot around 1 a.m., with an 11-year-old child among the wounded, said authorities.

One male was found unresponsive and not breathing when emergency responders arrived. Five girls between 11 and 17 years old also suffered gunshot wounds.

At least three victims were transferred to a pediatric unit. No victim was over 25 years old, reports CBS Miami.

When Miami police and rescue crews arrived at the club, it was a chaotic scene with a large throng of adults and teenagers. Rescuers found wounded people inside and outside the club, some too hurt to flee, said Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll.

The first emergency crews to arrive on the scene were warned to use caution “because there was still active shooting taking place in the area,” said Carroll to the Associated Press.

Some people were running, “people were screaming, people were saying they were shot,” said Carroll. Others were yelling for help for friends who had been shot, added Carroll.

Approximately 100 shots from four different guns were heard, said witnesses to the event to CBS Miami.

It is not clear what prompted the gunfire, how many weapons were fired, or who fired them. No arrests or suspects had been reported as of Sunday afternoon.

“The investigators are still interviewing witnesses. They’re going from hospital to hospital,” said police spokeswoman Frederica Burden to AP.

“Was it a private party, was it open to the public, that’s what we’re trying to figure out,” said Burden.

Fire Rescue officials will determine whether the venue is a teen club, licensed as a club for regular gatherings, or whether this was an informal event, said Carroll.

“What was very surprising to the responders was that these were kids that were out at 1 o’clock in the morning in a club and this type of violence took place where a bunch of kids were gathering … it’s very disturbing to see that,” said Carroll.
