It takes 70 to 90 pounds to bend the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

Testing by Consumer Reports revealed that the new Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus can withstand 70 to 90 pounds of pressure before bending.

The testing has been completed and the results are in–it takes 70 to 90 pounds to bend the new iPhone or iPhone 6 Plus, reports PC Magazine.

Consumer Reports recently crunch tested the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and several other competing smartphones to determine the amount of  pressure these devices can withstand. The phones were subjected to a “three-point flexural test,” in which each phone was positioned like a bridge between two posts, and a device pushed down into the center of the phone from the top.

The results showed the Apple iPhone 6 required less force to bend than the Apple iPhone 6 Plus, but more force than what Apple claims new iPhones can tolerate.

Tests conducted by Consumer Reports revealed that when 70 pounds of weight was applied to the iPhone 6, it started to deform, warp, or otherwise look different than normal. The iPhone 6 Plus lasted slightly longer, deforming at approximately 90 pounds.

The screen began to detach from the case of the iPhone 6 sooner than that of the iPhone 6 Plus. Approximately 100 pounds of pressure applied to the iPhone 6 caused case separation. To achieve the same result on the iPhone 6 Plus required 110 pounds of pressure.

An iPhone 6 can handle at least 25 kilograms of weight—around 55 pounds—in a similar three-point flexural test, according to attendees of a recent press tour of the Apple iPhone “torture lab.”

Apple insists the iPhone 6 can handle more weight than that, but did not say how much.

Compared to other smartphones, the iPhone 6 deformation weight equaled that of the HTC One M8, but was substantially lower than the iPhone 5 (130 pounds), LG G3 (130 pounds), and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (150 pounds). The Samsung phone was apparently constructed with adamantium; it took 150 pounds to separate the smartphone screen from its case. The LG G3 and iPhone 5 were also tougher than the iPhone 6 in screen separation tests, requiring 130 pounds and 150 pounds respectively before detachment.

“Two days ago, the Internet erupted with photos of bent iPhone 6s, and a very-viral video of a guy creasing an iPhone 6 Plus with his bare hands….[O]ur tests show that both iPhones seem tougher than the Internet fracas implies,” reads the Consumer Reports article.
