Yosemite wildfire burns 300 acres, firefighters fight on

A new wildfire on the edge of Yosemite National Park has burnt 300 acres and has forced the evacuation of about 700 homes.

A new wildfire on the edge of Yosemite National Park has burnt 300 acres and has forced the evacuation of about 700 homes.

The fire that began Friday afternoon is a short distance from the park, but has yet to have any direct impact on it.

Firefighters are working to make sure that the fire not only stays away from the park, but from the homes of residents in the area as well. Yesterday, an evacuation order was issued to 300 homes in the immediate area of the park.

Another 400 homeowners were advised to evacuate their homes as well.

State fire spokeswoman Karen Guillemin-Kanawyer said the blaze that broke out Friday was burning out of control and had consumed some 300 acres in Mariposa County.

She said that around 700 homes and 5 businesses were under evacuation orders in the community of Ponderosa Basin.

The firefighters reported about 25 percent progress in controlling the wild blaze.

According to the officials, they are still probing the cause of the fire and also said that no incidences of structure damages have been reported so far.

A firefighter suffered minor injuries while battling the fire. That firefighter is believed to be the only person to suffer injuries thus far. No cases of death or severe injury have been reported, officials said.

According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention (CalFire), the rescue efforts to evacuate people from the affected and on high risk zones continued as the ‘Bridge Fire’ held steady at 300 acres (120 hectares) on Saturday.

Last month, a fast-moving blaze had forced thousands of people to leave their homes and work in the populated region south of Yosemite. The Bridge Fire has been reported burning near the same location.

The difference between the Bridge Fire and last month’s Junction Fire was that the Bridge Fire was more rural and the structures threatened were in a residential area.
