Seriously ill child found in Spain after international search

A mother and father removed their seriously ill 5-year-old child from a British hospital to seek treatment for him in the Czech Republic, triggering an international search that ended when the child was found in Spain.

An international search for a seriously ill boy concluded in Spain, where the child, whose parents removed him from a UK hospital against medical advice, was found, reports euronews.com.
Brett and Naghmeh King, parents of 5-year-old Ashya King, who is suffering with a brain tumor, wanted their son to receive proton beam therapy in the Czech Republic. The treatment was not offered in the British medical center where the child was hospitalized.

Brett, father of the young patient, released a video on the YouTube channel of his son, pleading for the “ridiculous chase” to be called off.

“We are not neglecting our son, he’s in perfectly good health,” said King. “My son’s smiling, he’s happy,” he continued.

“We are doing things as a family with him. We just want to be left in peace. He’s very sick. I just want to get on with his treatment,” said King.

British regional police, concerned that the life of the child may have been at risk, launched an international appeal to find him. When the family stopped on the way to the Czech Republic for the specialist treatment, hotel staff spotted Ashya.

“I saw the news and the reason why there were looking for the room, the urgency due to the health of the child,” explained the hotel receptionist. “So as soon I saw them I called my boss and we got in touch with the police.  They arrived in a few minutes and they called an ambulance,” said the receptionist.

The boy was transferred to a high dependency unit at a Malaga hospital.  The child is now separated from his parents, something they wanted to avoid.

The parents of the boy have been arrested, and made an appearance at a Spanish court in Velez-Malaga. Tomorrow, a judge will decide whether or not they will face further legal proceedings in Madrid, reports the Daily Mirror.
