DVD wars: Amazon takes on ‘Captain America’

This isn't the first time that the e-commerce giant has tried this technique.

E-commerce giant Amazon has stopped preorders for some DVD and Blu-ray discs from Walt Disney Co. as part of a dispute over contract terms, The Wall Street Journal reports.

This means that those of you wishing to order Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as well as several other popular titles distributed by Disney, will have to wait until the contract dispute has been settled.

Citing Home Media Magazine, Bloomberg reports that the e-commerce giant has utilized this technique in the past to negotiate better terms with a movie studio. Starting in mid-May and ending in late June, Amazon halted preorders for movies from Warner Bros.

“They are squeezing studios on DVD pricing, understandable given their market position,” Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, told Bloomberg. “Disney can’t cut them off, and Amazon can cut Disney off, so I would say Amazon has the leverage.”

TIME notes that although Capital America: The Winter Soldier, Maleficent and Muppets Most Wanted can’t be preordered, digital copies are still available ahead of time.
