In 1978, 909 people died in "revolutionary suicide" at Jim Jones' Peoples Temple in Jonestown, Guyana.
Not all of the bodies of the Jonestown massacre victims made it to their final resting place, The Associated Press reports. The cremated remains of nine victims were recently found in a no-longer-used Delaware funeral home.
“All the survivors in touch with me are traumatized because that door had been closed,” Jonestown survivor Laura Johnston Kohl told The AP.
According to The News Journal, the finding was among 38 small containers of cremated remains located inside the former Minus Funeral Home. All but eight of the 38 containers were marked and identified, The News Journal reports.
In 1978, 909 people died in “revolutionary suicide” at Jim Jones’ Peoples Temple in Jonestown, Guyana, according to TIME. Jones founded the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project in the 1950’s. He moved his followers to Guyana in 1974.
“Death is a million times preferable to 10 more days of this life,” Jones reportedly said on tape before encouraging his followers to commit suicide by imbibing a cyanide-laced drink. “If you knew what was ahead of you … you’d be glad to be stepping over tonight.”
