CIA illegally hacked Senate computers

The investigation began after the CIA revealed they possessed one of the documents from those computers.

CIA Director John Brennan has come under scrutiny after an internal CIA report released Thursday included information that is fundamentally at odds with Brennan’s public statements.

Brennan had denied the CIA had done anything wrong regarding a case where CIA employees were suspected of improper searches of computer files and emails. The Thursday report revealed those employees, two lawyers and three computer specialists, had in fact searched Senate Intelligence Committee files and emails that were supposed to only be seen by congressional investigators.

This revelation is “not a vote of confidence in the CIA director,” Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) said Friday. He added, “It makes me wonder what else he doesn’t know.”

Some lawmakers are now calling for Brennan’s resignation; however, President Obama on Friday said he has “full confidence” in his CIA director, reminding that Brennan had ordered the internal investigation in the first place and has apologized to Senate leaders as reported by The Washington Post.

This scrutiny comes at the worst time for Brennan, who wants to challenge an expected release of a Senate investigation outing the CIA for misleading the legislative and executive branches on what their 9/11 interrogation program consisted of, which included waterboarding, and exaggerating its effectiveness.

Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M), a member of the Senate committee, said in a Friday interview with The Washington Post that he could not believe the five CIA employees were acting on their own. He said, “It’s not clear to me how exactly the director became aware of this specific intrusion. But it’s fairly clear to me . . . that the director played a role in setting the tone that would have led people to think this was somehow appropriate.”

The investigation began after the CIA revealed they possessed one of the documents from those computers, a draft report summarizing documents being turned over to Congress.
