Two injured after cable snaps at Ohio’s Cedar Point amusement park

The Skyhawk will be closed until an investigation is complete, according to a park spokesman.

A cable on swing ride Skyhawk snapped Saturday night at amusement park Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, injuring two guests.

The park’s emergency personnel were immediately called. One guest was treated and released at the park, the other taken to a local hospital to be treated and has been released, according to Bryan Edwards, park spokesman.

The cable, attached to one of the ride’s carriages, snapped at around 10 p.m. while the ride was in motion, according to Ohio news source wkyc.com.

Cedar Point’s website describes Skyhawk as a 125-feet-tall swing set with two giant arms which hold 20 riders each and swing them at speeds up to 60 mph in a scissor motion — statistics that, while meant to be depicted as thrilling on Cedar Point’s website, now may seem more ominous.

Wkyc.com secured an email with one of the patrons who was on the ride at the time. The patron, Tom Achtziger, who was riding with his two children, gave spine-chilling details: “When the cable broke, they didn’t stop the ride. They shut down the power and the ride kept swinging, letting gravity take over…meanwhile, the cable was whipping around smacking the ride and destroying things on the ground. We are all lucky that there were no more serious injuries.”

The article provided photos Achtziger took from the ride; he says, “Some of these pictures were taken while we were still trapped in our seats, as the ride would not release the safety belts.”

The Skyhawk has closed at least twice in its run, according to wkyc.com, once just last year, the other the same day it opened in 2006, both for unrelated issues.

The Skyhawk will be closed until an investigation is complete, says Edwards.
