Sole survivor of Texas mass shooting quotes Harry Potter at memorial service

The young girl barely avoided the bullet meant for the back of her own head.

The sole survivor of a shooting that killed her parents and her four siblings attended the memorial service for her family Saturday.

Cassidy Stay, 15, while at Lemm Elementary School in Spring, Texas, said, “I’m really thankful for all the people that have been praying for me and keeping me and my family in their thoughts,” and that she is “on a straightforward path to a full recovery,” according to USA Today.

“In The Prisoner of Azkaban, Dumbledore says, ‘Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.’ I know that my mom, dad, Bryan, Emily, Becca and Zach are in a much better place,” Stay added. “And I’ll be able to see them again one day… Stay Strong!”

The service was chosen to be held at the elementary school where two of Cassidy Stay’s sibling’s attended. Hundreds were in attendance.

Ronald Lee Haskell, 33, the ex-husband to Cassidy’s mother’s sister, is charged with committing the crime of killing his former sister-in-law Katie Stay, 33, her husband, Stephen, 39, their two boys aged 4 and 14, and their two girls aged 7 and 9.

Cassidy barely avoided the bullet meant for the back of her own head. She was released from the hospital Friday, just in time to attend the memorial.

After Cassidy’s extremely fortunate escape from Haskell, her next step was to call the police and inform them that Haskell was heading to the home of her grandparents.

At the memorial, that grandfather, Roger Lyon, said that Cassidy is his hero for saving them and the rest of Cassidy’s family.

We might be mourning the deaths of 20 — yes I said 20 — people today,” said Lyon, “including myself and nearly all of our children and grandchildren.”

USA Today reports that Haskell’s motive for killing the family was that they would not tell him the location of his former wife, Melanie. The two had divorced just last year after a troubled 11-year marriage which included Haskell being arrested for physical assault.

At the memorial, 100 balloons for each of the persons being honored were released, totaling 600.
