Philly brings in the 4th with America’s largest free concert

Philadelphia proves that they know how to celebrate America the right way with their Wawa Welcome America! Jam On the Parkway concert featuring The Roots as the house band, along with special guests including rap’s reigning queen Nicki Minaj to British import Ed Sheeran.

It’s not just a huge concert on the Fourth of July — Wawa Welcome America is an event that started back in 2011. This year, the fun kicked off on June 28 with free activities for the whole family to enjoy in the lead up to Friday’s main event.

The Roots, who many know from The Tonight Show, did their thing all night. Mayor Nutter said during the event, “hottest city with the hottest house band: The Roots are in the house!” They rocked it out with a handful of other artists on the bill who spoiled the crowd with free music all night. Chart toppers like Aloe Blacc, pop princess Ariana Grande, and American Idol’s Jennifer Hudson were on deck singing their hits for the thousands who came out to enjoy. The crowd even got some Minaj and Sheeran; “The Lego House” singer shined with The Roots backing him up.

Speaking of which, The Roots were joined by none other than DJ Jazzy Jeff Townes and also kicked off the whole show with their rendition of the Rocky theme song. That was the best way to musically pay tribute to Philly.

Marlon Waynes, who’s best known for The Waynes Bros. and most recently A Haunted House, hosted the event and made a jab at his large family when he said it was “like a Wayans family barbecue with a couple of white people sprinkled about.”

Things went down perfectly — the city sure has it’s work cut out for it if they plan to top this in 2015.
