Police: 11-year-old autistic boy kept in cage by parents

The boy appeared well-fed and had no visible injuries.

Police say that an 11-year-old autistic boy was kept in a cage by his parents, Reuters reports. The boy has been removed from the home and his parents, 40-year-old Loi Vu and 35-year-old Tracy Trang Le, were arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and false imprisonment.

Reuters notes that authorities were led to the home by an anonymous tipster on Tuesday.

“Once inside [police] found that there was a cage in one of the bedrooms. Inside that cage was a mattress and it appears to the investigation, at this particular point, that an 11-year-old boy living here, who suffers from Autism, was being kept in that cage,” Lt. Bob Dunn told CBS Los Angeles.

The parents reportedly “resorted to placing their son in the dog kennel to help control his behavior and frequent ‘outbursts,’ relation to his Autism,” according to authorities cited by CBS Los Angeles.

The New York Daily News reports that the boy looked well-fed and had no visible injuries.

According to Autism Speaks, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized by troubles in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors.
