Pain at the pump: 4th of July gas prices to be highest in six years

Do you plan on traveling this 4th of July?

The 4th of July is a day for celebrating the nation’s independence, but there won’t be any celebrating at the gas pump this year. According to a report from USA Today, holiday gas prices are anticipated to be the highest since 2008.

AAA says that today’s national average price for regular gasoline is approximately 20 cents per gallon more expensive than on July 4, 2013, when the average mark was $3.48. This is the highest price since July 2008, when it was more than $4 per gallon.

Despite higher gas prices, more Americans will be traveling this 4th of July, the Los Angeles Times reports. In fact, 41 millions Americans are expected to travel for the holiday, a 1.9 percent increase over 2013.

“A willingness to dust off our credit cards for a Fourth of July vacation may have as much as anything to do with the reason more Americans will be traveling this year,” AAA Idaho spokesman Dave Carlson said in a statement. “Consumers have shown a knack for economizing other portions of their vacation budgets when travel costs go up.”
