Nine people wounded in Bourbon Street shooting

Gunfire erupted early Sunday morning on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, wounding nine people.

Nine people were wounded, two of them critically, when two young men exchanged gunfire on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early Sunday morning, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The shooting occurred at approximately 2:45 a.m. in the 700 block of the famous street, just two blocks from Jackson Square and around the corner from Preservation Hall, in the French Quarter of the city.

“This is two young men, both armed with firearms, who chose to settle a dispute between themselves without care for anyone else,” said  Police Supt. Ronal W. Serpas in a midday briefing. Serpas did not not know whether the shooting was related to gang activity.

One man “seemed pissed off” at another, pulled out a gun, shot at the man, then “turned around on the crowd and started shooting at us,” said an unnamed witness to CBS News affiliate WWL-TV.

Serpas urged any person who has knowledge of what happened to contact the police. He also requested business owners to submit their surveillance footage. “Somebody knows who did this,” Serpas said. “Somebody’s mama knows who did this.”

The victims of the shooting were taken to hospitals. Two of the injured were in critical condition and seven were in stable condition. The incident Sunday morning is the third major shooting on Bourbon Street in the last three years, reports CBS News.

On Saturday, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu addressed the Aspen Ideas Festival, a gathering of world business, political and thought leaders. Landrieu delivered an impassioned speech entitled “Will Violence be our Legacy?” on the plague of violence in America, reports NOLA.com. The shooting on Bourbon Street occurred less than eight hours later.

“These kinds of incidents will not go unanswered,” said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu in a statement. “We will not rest until every corner of this city is safe.”
