Cruise ship returns to port after boiler room fire

Whether or not Holland America will offer any sort of refund or complimentary apology to passengers affected by the delay remains to be seen.

The 3,000 people aboard the Westerdam cruise ship had their trip nearly cut short on Saturday, after a blaze in the boiler room forced the vessel to make an unexpected “return to port” stop in Seattle. According to a report from NBC news, the boat is owned and operated by the Holland America cruise line. The company told reporters that no one aboard, either passengers or crew members, was injured as a result of the fire, and that the Westerdam returned to port more out of “an abundance of caution” than out of pure necessity.

Since Holland America is based in Seattle, the boat had not been on the move for long before the fire broke out in one of the ship’s boiler rooms. In fact, the fire ignited at about 5 p.m. PDT, while the Westerdam was still on its way out of Washington’s Puget Sound. Crew members worked to quickly extinguish the flames, but the fire flared up again a short amount of time later. Through the use of hoses and “high-pressure mist,” the crew was able to beat back the fire once more. However, the worry was that the fire would return once again, or that there was something wrong with the boiler room that would make any further progress in the boat unsafe for all onboard.

Rather than risk passengers, property, and crew members, Holland America made the call to turn the ship around and bring it back to Seattle port. There, the boat was investigated by Coast Guard officials, who more or less gave it a clean bill of health. Still, the time it took to get back to Seattle and have the Westerdam inspected took a toll on the boat’s scheduled route.

Holland America said that the boat was not cleared to sail again until early Sunday morning, meaning that passengers had to wait through the night as their ship sat in port. Whether or not Holland America will offer any sort of refund or complimentary apology to passengers affected by the delay remains to be seen.
