Report: Teen hacks school records, changes grades

The student accessed the school's computer system using a teacher's password.

The Associated Press reports that a 16-year-old sophomore in New Jersey, whose name was not released because of his age, has been charged with hacking into a school computer to alter the grades and attendance records of several students.

According to CBSNewYork, the young man was charged with multiple counts of second-degree computer theft for the purpose of unlawfully accessing and changing data, as well as one count of impeding arrest.

Authorities contend that the sophomore at Orange High School altered grades and attendance records by accessing the school’s computer system with an employee’s password.

“Our review continues and the District has taken all appropriate steps pursuant to its policies to provide notice and an opportunity to be heard to the students and parents involved,” according to a statement released by the school and obtained by The Star-Ledger“Furthermore, due to the nature of the actions, the District was legally obligated to report the unauthorized student record changes to the criminal authorities.”
