Couple rescued at sea after 14 hours

At first, the rescuers thought the stranded boaters were fish.

Could you tread water for 14 hours? How about after sustaining multiple jellyfish stings?

Two Florida boaters were rescued Saturday after doing precisely that.

50-year-old, Sean McGovern, and 52-year-old, Mellisa Morris, survived over 14-hours in the Atlantic Ocean before being rescued by two off-duty detectives, a firefighter and a civilian. Both McGovern and Morris are expected to make a full recovery.

“Another 30 minutes to an hour, it probably wouldn’t have the same outcome as it did today, because they were in pretty bad shape,” said Josh Webb, one of the rescuers, to WSVN. “They were both cramping pretty bad, they were both very dehydrated, very tired. They appeared [to be] mildly hypothermic.”

According to reports, the couple fell off their 30-foot Island Hopper boat at around 6:00 p.m. Friday evening. Without any life vests or means to communicate with nearby boaters, the couple had to tread water through the night. As if that were not miserable enough, McGovern told his rescuers that the couple also ran into three or four jellyfish during the course of the evening.

The four rescuers initially thought McGovern and Morris were fish, before realizing they needed help.

“Personally, I was surprised,” said Steve Couch, another rescuer, to WSVN. “I was amazed that they lasted that long in the water. I’ve just never seen something like that before.”
