Sex offender stabs teen girl, self after long car chase: Cops

The sex offender and missing girl were spotted by a truck stop cashier.

According to a report from The Associated Press, Steven Myers, 41, led police on a long car chase after being spotted by a truck stop cashier who had recently seen information about the criminal via social media.

Myers, a registered sex offender, was travelling with Ashley Lyon, a missing teenage girl from Florida. The 16 year old had gone missing last Wednesday in the Tampa, Florida, area, which is approximately 10 hours from where she and Meyers were spotted by the cashier in Louisiana, The AP notes.

According to Reuters, Meyers hit several other vehicles during a high-speed chase and refused to stop his vehicle until spike strips had destroyed his tires and his engine caught fire. Myers reportedly left his car with a knife in hand, but was subdued by a stun gun. Lyon was discovered with 10 stab wounds inside the vehicle. The AP says that Meyers also stabbed himself before being subdued by police.

Reuters adds that the 16 year old was not abducted by Meyers. Lyon and Meyers had exchanged text messages before leaving Tampa together. Her family says that she had been diagnosed as bipolar and did not have her medications with her.

“It will be a long and arduous healing process,” Roger Lyon, Lyon’s father, told reporters, according to Reuters. “My daughter is strong. I know she’s strong-willed.”
