A father in Southern California was killed on Friday while trying to prevent his daughter from driving drunk.

According to an Associated Press report, 37-year-old Soukvilay Barton had been arguing, supposedly about her drunk driving,  with family members at her house in Riverside, California. Witnesses say  family members were trying to dissuade Barton from driving drunk.

Ignoring her family’s please, Barton went to leave the house in her BMW convertible. Her father, 69-year-old Bounmy Rajsombath, in a last ditch effort to keep Barton from leaving the house, went outside and stood in the driveway behind his daughter’s car. Barton backed her car out of the garage anyway, running over her father and severely injuring him.

When Barton saw that her father was injured, she allegedly stopped her car and started sobbing. Authorities arrived shortly, both to rush Rajsombath to the hospital and to arrest Barton under suspicion of drunk driving. Rajsombath was taken to a hospital in Riverside, but was soon pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, investigation into the tragic incident has continued. It is likely that Barton will at very least be charged with a DUI. Police have said that she could face additional charges for striking and killing her father.
