Oregon school shooter wanted to kill 'sinners;' Parents apologize

The shooter reportedly an AR-15 type rifle, a semi-automatic handgun, ammunition and a knife to school.

Portland’s KGW reports that 15-year-old Jared Padgett, who shot and killed 14-year-old Emilio Hoffman at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Oregon, on Tuesday, wanted to kill “sinners.”

According to the news station, authorities discovered Padgett’s journal while searching his father’s house. Authorities note that there were no details in the boy’s journal that indicated how or when the shooting might take place nor were any students or teachers named as targets.

The 15 year old reportedly brought an AR-15 type rifle, a semi-automatic handgun, ammunition and a knife to school. After killing Hoffman and wounding a teacher, Padgett took his own life as police were closing in.

On Friday, Padgett’s parents apologized.

“We are at a loss as to how and why this tragedy unfolded,” read a letter obtained by Fox affiliate KPTV in Portland. “Our family does not condone and has never promoted violence or hatred toward anyone. The values that we have taught our children are love in Jesus Christ, compassion, forgiveness, and patience. These were all natural attributes we observed within Jared daily. Knowing that these are the values that we have taught our children, we are horrified and distraught by the actions perpetrated by our son.”

According to FoxNews.com, a possible motive in the shooting has not yet been revealed.
