Coldplay's 'Ghost Stories' enters at No. 1 with the biggest sales week of 2014

The British rock band's fourth studio album debuts with impressive numbers.

Coldplay’s newest album titled Ghost Stories is No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart this week selling over 383,000 copies. Ghost Stories easily has the biggest sales frame of 2014 so far beating Eric Church’s The Outsiders which sold 288,000 copies in the week ending in Feb. 16.

This also marks the largest sales week for any album since Beyonce’s self-titled album which began with 617,000 copies in the week ending Dec. 15, 2013. Beyonce’s self-titled album was a success partially due to it being released as an iTunes exclusive.

Coldplay owes a large part of their No. 1 week to digital downloads of Ghost Stories as well. The digital versions of the hit album sold 245,000, making up 64 percent of its first week sales. Ghost Stories now has the largest digital sales week for a widely-available album since One Direction’s Midnight Memories (275,000) in the week ending Dec. 1, 2013.

This is the fourth studio album released by the British rock band to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The band’s 2011 release, Mylo Xyloto, started off its run with 447,000 copies. The debut of 2008’s Viva La Vida Or Death and All His Friends was 721,000. Their first week No. 1 hit album, 2005’s X&Y, made an entrance of 737,000 copies.

For the first time in 2014, two titles sold more than 200,000 in the same week. The other artist with a great sales week was country singer Brantley Gilbert with his album Just As I Am. Gilbert claimed the No. 2 with 211,000 copies sold. The last time two titles were this successful was Nov. 17, 2013 with Lady GaGa’s ARTPOP (258,000) and Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP (210,000).

Coldplay has been promoting Ghost Stories all throughout their release week with a performance on their own NBC TV special. The British rock group appeared in other shows within the NBC network such as The Voice, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and Saturday Night Live.
