Barbara Walters is donating her archives to her alma mater Sarah Lawrence College. According to the Journal News, Walters announced the gift while making a surprise appearance at Sarah Lawrence’s commencement on Friday, May 24.

Walters, 84, gave an unannounced speech at the commencement, explaining that her journalistic fearlessness arose in part because “I went to a college where I was not afraid to ask questions. And this is that college.” Sarah Lawrence president, Karen Lawrence, spoke after Walters, who she called “our extraordinary alumna.” Lawrence said the school was “thrilled” with the gift, which will include photographs, recordings, and papers from Walters’ career in journalism. CNN reporter Fareed Zakaria then gave the official keynote address to the 455 graduating masters and baccalaureate students.

Barbara Walters, famous for her intimate sit-down interviews of celebrities, presidents, and other world leaders, started her television career in 1962 on The Today Show. She officially retired on May 16 but remains the executive producer of ABC’s The View, which she created in 1997.
