'Pillowcase rapist' to be freed despite public outrage

Judge Brown's decision sparked outrage from both officials and the general public.

According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, the “pillowcase rapist” will be released on Santa Clara County Judge Gilbert Brown’s order. Christopher Evans Hubbart will reportedly rent a small house in a rural area near the city of Palmdale, California, when he is freed on July 7, 2014.

The BBC says that Hubbart admitted to raping and assaulting approximately 40 women between 1971 and 1982. However, authorities think the number of victims may be closer to 100. In 1990, he committed another attack shortly after being released on parole. Eventually, Hubbart was sent to a state mental hospital, but doctors there recently said he was fit for release.

The LA Times adds that Hubbart was given the nickname the “pillowcase rapist” because he silenced his victims with a pillowcase while assaulting them.

Judge Brown’s decision sparked outrage from both officials and the general public, who expressed their disappointment in letters, emails and via social media.

“We will do everything within our authority to protect the residents of Los Angeles County from this dangerous predator,” said Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey at a news conference Friday, according to the LA Times.

Although Hubbart will be required to wear a GPS ankle bracelet after being freed, that is no guarantee that he will not commit another crime. For example, two paroled sex offenders allegedly wore GPS trackers while raping and killing four women in late 2013 and early 2014, according to a FoxNews.com report.

Bustle notes that Hubbart will also be required to have a state contractor with him when he is in public for the first six months after he is released.
