Facebook improves privacy for new users

Facebook announced some notable privacy changes on Thursday, including the fact that new users will now only share posts with friends by default.

On Thursday, Facebook announced that they are changing their privacy settings for new users. The new settings come as a surprise, and make “friends” the default audience for new users posts, instead of having the general public be the default.

While the change is quite small, it gives users who might be unfamiliar with Facebook a little privacy, as well as the comfort that the public won’t be able to see their posts without their authorization.

“We recognize that it is much worse for someone to accidentally share with everyone when they actually meant to share just with friends, compared with the reverse,” said Facebook.

Existing users can change the default audience for their posts by managing their accounts privacy settings. Not only that, but users can also select the audience for each post as posts are created.

Not only is Facebook making changes to the settings, but the social media giant said that they would be changing the layout of the settings in order to help users be able to navigate them better and understand who can see their profile and posts. Included in these layout changes is a pop-up message that asks users to confirm if they want their posts to be shared to the public. Even the Facebook iPhone app has been changed to put the audience selection menu in the top-left rather than at the bottom.

The company also noted that it will roll out their new “Anonymous Login” feature, which allows users to have more control over which information can be shared with third-party applications when logging into services around the Internet.
