'Star Wars' snatches up 'Godzilla' director Gareth Edwards

Director Gareth Edwards will now get a chance to play in the Star Wars universe.

The “Force” is now officially in the hands of a new director. Disney and Lucasfilm announced today that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will be in charge of one of the planned Star Wars spin-offs. Disney CEO Bob Igner released a statement in early May about plans to release three Star Wars spin-offs that would be released in-between the main volumes of Star Wars movies.

Rumors instantly began popping up about what the spin-offs would be with the most popular ideas being: a movie about bounty hunger Boba Fett, a Jedi Master Yoda movie, a Han Solo origin story, and an untold Luke Skywalker adventure. Nothing has been confirmed yet for any of the projects. It is still unclear what kind of film Edwards will be directing.

Edwards’ film  has a screenwriter attached as well. Gary Whitta (Book of Eli, After Earth) will be penning the script that is already set for release for Dec. 2016. Other writers have been announced for the Star Wars spin-offs such as Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past). Although he may be a newer director, Edwards is not unfamiliar with the Star Wars universe.

“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life- join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm,” said Edwards in a statement after the announcement.

Edwards’ current film, Godzilla, just opened last week earning an amazing $93.1 million and receiving positive reviews. Sequels for the “big lizard” have been announced due to the film’s success. Potential scheduling problems for both the Star Wars and Godzilla franchises could arise, but it does not seem to phase Legendary Entertainment’s chairmen and CEO Thomas Tull.

“The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would be a Star Wars installment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth’s imprint on the Star Wars universe,” said Tull in a statement in response to Edwards’ news.

Currently there are two Godzilla sequels planned. The Godzilla sequel is still in early development and without a script.

Edwards began his directing career in visual effects and moved onto directing with his first feature Monsters in 2010. The “small creature” thriller was made under $500,000 with Edwards himself creating most of the visual effects. Moving from such a small film to being a part of the biggest franchise in cinema history is quite an achievement for the young director.

The newest installment in the saga, Star Wars: Episode VII, just began filming in Abu Dhabi with director J.J. Abrams at the helm. The scheduled release date is Dec. 18, 2015.
