Google in talks to buy video game streaming startup Twitch for $1 billion

All the reports agree that Google’s YouTube is leading the negotiations on the search engine’s side.

According to multiple reports, Google is negotiating a $1 billion purchase of live-streaming service Twitch.

Exactly how close the parties are to an agreement, though, is a matter of some dispute.

According to a Sunday report from Variety, Google/Twitch had reached a deal that would be announced “imminently.” Hours later, however, the Wall Street Journal reported that the talks “are at an early stage, and a deal isn’t imminent.”

All the reports agree that Google’s YouTube is leading the negotiations on the search engine’s side. Lawyers for the video hosting site are reportedly already preparing for an antitrust challenge from the Justice Department, which seems likely given that both services are at the top of their respective fields.

Observers acknowledge that on many grounds YouTube and Twitch seem like a natural fit. Dubbed the “ESPN of video games” by Forbes magazine, the San Francisco-based Twitch is a sort of live streaming, gaming-focused version of YouTube. Audiences watch video games being played via a live stream, and can participate through an integrated chat room.

With 45 million monthly users, Twitch is one of the web’s largest live-streaming video sites, Ars Technica reports. It does not come close to matching YouTube’s one billion monthly users though. And some observers worry that by bringing one of YouTube’s only potential rivals into the fold, the acquisition could result in an unchallenged, internet video juggernaut.

If the two became one… neither would have to compete with the other,” Forbes’ Paul Tassi wrote. “Even if they were tackling different aspects of video initially, they’d merge into some sort of invincible uber-portal.”
