Teen booted from yearbook for wearing tuxedo

The Catholic school reportedly cut the photo because the girl was wearing a tuxedo in violation of the school’s dress code.

Students at San Francisco’s Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep School showed up to class in bow ties Friday, to protest the removal of classmate Jessica Urbina’s photo from the yearbook, SFGate reports.

The Catholic school reportedly cut the photo because Urbina was wearing a tuxedo in violation of the school’s dress code. To show solidarity with their friend, classmates of Urbina wore bow ties of all colors on Friday, while Urbina’s older brother, Michael Urbina, 21, spearheaded a social media campaign to protest the school’s actions.

“Please explain to me why my sister cannot receive the same treatment as every other student? Why Sacred Heart Cathedral?” Urbina said on Twitter.

Urbina created the “JessicasTux” Twitter hashtag, which quickly spread across tweeters in the Bay area and beyond. According SF Weekly, within hours of the hashtag’s creation everyone from alumni, to radio DJs, to local cab drivers, had censured the school on Twitter.

Sacred Heart subsequently went into damage control mode, scrambling to release a statement to the media. School officials claimed that Jessica’s tuxedo went against an Archdiocese of San Francisco policy forcing female students to wear dresses in yearbook photos.

“As we prepare to pass out yearbooks, it is always regretful when a student portrait is omitted for any reason,” school officials said in a statement obtained by SFGate. “We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that all students are included in the future. We want to reassure our community that all graduating seniors are represented in the commencement program.”
