Teen who survived flight in wheel well leaves Hawaii

No criminal charges are expected to be filed against the minor.

According to a report from The Associated Press, the 15-year-old stowaway who made headlines in late April after surviving a flight in the wheel well of a Boeing 767 is no longer in Hawaii.

After withstanding freezing cold temperatures and a lack of oxygen at high altitudes, the young teenager was questioned by both local authorities and the FBI before being transferred to a local hospital for treatment. His survival on the flight from California to Hawaii is considered a medical miracle.

The AP notes that the spokeswoman for Hawaii’s Department of Human Services did not provide details on how or why the young man left, only that they are no longer involved with the case.

Reuters report that Abdilahi Yusuf, the boy’s father, arrived in Hawaii earlier this week to locate his son and bring him back home to Santa Clara, California. He was initially denied access to his son by authorities. Citing privacy laws, the Hawaii Department of Human Services could not release any additional information regarding the minor, including details surrounding the case and who escorted the young man off the island.

It is still unclear why the teenager jumped the fence at San Jose International Airport nearly two and a half weeks ago. There is speculation he attempted to catch a plane to see his mother who lives in a refugee camp in Africa.

The young man currently lives in California with his father and stepmother and has been struggling to adjust to life in the U.S. No criminal charges are expected to be filed against the minor.
