Groundhog Day came with a prediction of another six weeks of Winter. A season that many Americans were hoping would end early.
As is tradition, Pennsylvania’s famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his lair, surrounded by thousands of onlookers, at dawn on Sunday, MSN reports. The legend of the groundhog states that if he sees his shadow on Feb. 2, winter will be prolonged for another six weeks. If he doesn’t, however, spring comes early.
Unfortunately for many across the country, who have been coming to grips with prolonged cold temperatures, Phil saw his shadow on Sunday.
Although the legend predicts Phil does all the work on his own, according to MSN, Phil’s prediction is decided before he emerges by a group called the Inner Circle. The group wears tuxedos and top hats for the special day each year.
Phil is one of three groundhogs who are famous for forecasting the weather. He is also joined by Staten Island Chuck in New York and General Beauregard Lee in Atlanta.
According to the Washington Post, on Sunday morning men and women gathered around Dupont Circle in DC to watch Potomac Phil, Washington’s answer to Pennsylvania’s famous groundhog. He stood up on a wooden board decorated for all to see.
Visitors of Dupont Circle were committed to the yearly tradition and wore tuxedos as they handled the furry animal. Potomac Phil’s prediction was the same as Punxsutawney Phil.
