Heart disease inspires woman to lose 125 pounds

Heather Kern was diagnosed with heart disease but continues to improve her condition through diet and exercise.

The New Year always brings with it various resolutions for people to focus on. At the top of that list is to lose weight and eat healthier. For one woman this task was harder for her than most, but not impossible.

According to a CNN report detailing her weight-loss experience, Heather Kern knew that her heart beat was irregular ever since she was 11 years old. It sped up and would then drop back to normal. For a longtime she didn’t know what was causing these changes in her heart rate and her doctors didn’t mention her symptoms were related to any other health issue.

Despite all of these issues, Kern wasn’t reluctant to exercise. She remained excited about being healthy and went on walks and even swam laps in the pool. However, after the birth of her daughter in 2008 she learned that her issues were related to heart disease. Her cardiologist also believed she suffered from Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia.

This news sent Kern into a depression as she struggled with thoughts that she was going to die. Especially after she gained 40 pounds during her pregnancy.

As she struggled with this news in 2012 she came across a weight-loss challenge between strangers online who counted calories to lose weight. Even though she was skeptical about it working she began counting her calories and within six weeks dropped an amazing 20 pounds, winning the competition.

One of her most important strategies was getting rid of the candy in her house and not eating after her daughter. She also gained a boost of confidence and made calorie counting an everyday tasks. Sites like Calorie Count and others helped her stay on track.

As of October 2013, Kern is 135 pounds and taking half of her heart medication; a change which even her doctor attributes to her weight loss.

Through her perseverance and desire to be healthier Kern proved not only to herself but those around her that it is possible to transform your life when you are dedicated.
