Delta Air Lines to honor website’s cheap fare errors

Some lucky travelers were able to book flights with savings nearing $400.

A computer glitch on Delta Air Lines’ website on Thursday resulted in users booking unusually low rates for air travel.

Delta’s website, and other booking sites, were displaying incorrect airfare prices for Delta flights from 10 a.m. through noon ET, according to CBS New York. It was a good time to have travel plans out of Cincinnati. Inadvertent deals included a roundtrip flight between Cincinnati and Minneapolis in February for $25.05, and a roundtrip flight between Cincinnati and Salt Lake City for $48.41. Ordinarily, both of these flights would be priced at more than $400.

George Hobica, founder of AirfareWatchDog.com, told CBS New York that a junior programmer who “made a mistake or two” was likely responsible for the error.

While the glitch has been fixed, Trebor Banstetter, a Delta spokesperson, said the airline “will honor any fares purchased at the incorrect price.”

“People just go wild. People have been bragging about booking six first-class tickets to Hawaii,” said Hobica. “People hate the airlines so much that when this happens, they say: I’m going to get back at you for the time you broke my suitcase and didn’t pay for it.”

Department of Transportation regulations require that companies honor any mistake-in-advertising prices.
