New York’s oldest resident celebrates 114th birthday

She has well over 100 nieces and nephews, six of which she has helped send to college.

In East New York, Miss Susannah Mushate Jones celebrated her birthday at the Vandalia Senior Center of East New York in Brooklyn last Friday, the New York Daily News reports. Miss Susie, as she is better known, wasn’t celebrating just any birthday though, she was celebrating her 114th. Miss Susie is the second oldest American and third oldest person in the world, according to records.

The celebration at the Vandalia Senior Center had friends, family and local dignitaries gathered, so they could all sing Miss Susie “Happy Birthday” and present her with a birthday cake. The quick witted Miss Susie showed up to the party looking her best, wearing a flowery dress and white hat.

Miss Susie has been blind for the past 13 years, has difficulty hearing and uses a wheelchair, but remains in good health. The only medication she needs is for her high blood pressure in fact.

“If I look half as good at 60 as Miss Susie does now, I’ll be doing fine,” Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-Brooklyn Heights) told the Daily News.

When asked how she has lived so long, Miss Susie gives credit for her long life to never drinking and smoking. However, she does have a few vices like bacon, chewing gum and lace undergarments.

Her 81-year-old niece, Lavilla Watson, told the Daily News, “If she doesn’t want to be bothered, she’ll tell you!”

Miss Susie was born on July 6, 1899, in Lowndes County, Alabama. She was the third of 11 children born into her family. In 1923 she packed her things and moved to New York City to work as a nanny. She used the money she earned herself to bring her entire family north.

“She was the Harriet Tubman of the 21st century,” her godchild, Valerie Price, 59, told the Daily News, “She helped give her family a better life.”

Miss Susie was married for a brief amount of time, but had no children. However, she does have well over 100 nieces and nephews, 6 of which she has helped send to college.

She retired in 1965, but still remains very active. For the last 29 years she has lived on the 5th floor of the Vandalia Houses. She stood at patrol in the lobby there until she turned 106.

The Vandalia Houses’ second-oldest resident is 97 year old Rhoda Hunt.
