Samsung unveils Galaxy S4 Active

Samsung releases a new version of its S4.

Only days after Samsung revealed a “mini” version of their flagship Galaxy S4 phone, the company confirmed plans on Wednesday to release the Galaxy S4 Active, a tough new model that will have waterproof and dust-proof capabilities.

Though phone cases exist to protect expensive mobile devices against the elements, phone developers have largely continued to create fragile models, from easily breakable glass screens to aluminum shells that seem to attract scratches and other wear and tear. With the new Active model, however, Samsung is bucking that trend. Not only will the phone’s full-sealed design keep dust particles out and allow the phone’s interior computing device to work more efficiently, Samsung also claims that the Active will be able to withstand up to 30 minutes in meter-deep water without sustaining damage.

The water resistance extends to the phone’s headphone jack, and Samsung has even provided an “Aqua Mode” camera option to solidify the phone’s submarine abilities. In other words, Active customers will not just be protected in case they drop their phone in the sink or fall in the pool with their clothes on; they are actually encouraged to dive into the pool, phone in hand, and start shooting pictures.

Samsung said they wanted to build a phone that would be user-friendly for people who love the outdoors and thrive in environments that might not be conducive to regular phone preservation.

“The Galaxy S4 Active is designed to enhance life experiences of the active user who wants to stay connected while exploring environments from the most rugged mountain trails to the roughest rivers,” the company said Wednesday. “Whether capturing every moment of a wild rafting trip or taking a great underwater photo in the pool, the device’s unique construction lets users capture amazing moments previously impossible using a normal smartphone.”

However, while the Galaxy S4 Active carries the same name as Samsung’s flagship, it will not simply be an identical phone in tougher packaging. The Active’s specs are generally more modest, including a 1.9 GHZ Quad-Core processor and an 8-megapixel camera. The current market S4 boasts a 13-megapixel camera, and can carry as many as eight cores within its behemoth frame. Both phones, however, bear the Galaxy’s trademark 5.0-inch screen.

The Galaxy S4 Active is set to hit the market this summer in the United States and Sweden, and will come in three different colors: Urban Grey, Dive Blue and Orange Flare. Pricing speculation for the product has not yet been announced.
