A fifth season of Arrested Development?
Seven years after “Arrested Development” was cut from Fox, Netflix released a fourth season through their streaming service. During an interview with “E! News,” the creator of the show Mitch Hurwitz discussed the celebrity cameos he wanted during the fourth season as well as the possibility of a fifth season and maybe even a movie.
One of the big names Hurwitz had in mind for a cameo role in the fourth season was George Clooney. Considering Clooney’s sense of humor and ability to pull off just about any comedy role, he seems like a perfect fit for “Arrested Development.”.Hurwitz had Clooney’s role all worked out for the fourth season: “George Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor) has this land in Mexico and they was going to be constantly spooked and chased off the land by these really handsome men. We were going to get people like George Clooney,” Hurwitz said. “And at one point [the handsome men] were going to say, ‘We are the Mexican Romneys!'”
That would have been perfect, especially if Clooney’s partner in crime Brad Pitt would have been involved, but it wasn’t meant to be. Hardcore “Arrested Development” and Clooney fans shouldn’t be too disappointed, though. Even though Clooney’s cameo didn’t happen in the fourth season, there’s a chance Clooney could show up in the potential fifth season or movie.
Despite originally saying that he had done all he could after three seasons with the show back in 2006, Hurwitz said that he is up for another season and maybe even a movie, but the fans are likely in for another long wait. “I don’t have a timeline yet. If there’s more, I promise you we will put a date out there,” Hurwitz said in the interview. Since Hurwitz doesn’t have a timeline for the future “Arrested Development” projects, one can’t help but wonder if the fans would be interested in it, especially if they have to wait another half-decade or more.
The reception of “Arrested Development” hasn’t been as good Hurwitz hoped for, and some watchers have downright hated it. The ones who didn’t care for the show either didn’t like the direction the show took several years down the line or were unhappy with the new format. Hurwitz doesn’t seem deterred by the naysayers though. “I think it’s inevitable if you do that people are not going to be on board…but that’s a risk I willingly took,” Hurwitz said.
It sounds like if Hurwitz didn’t mind taking the risk of reviving the series, then he probably won’t let the mixed reviews get in the way of future projects.
