Cheerios commercial with interracial couple sparks racist backlash [VIDEO]

What do you think of Cheerios' reaction to the racist backlash over their commercial?

A Cheerios commercial with an interracial couple has sparked a racist backlash on YouTube, reports TIME. The video, which has been viewed nearly one million times on YouTube as of Saturday afternoon, received so many racist reactions on the video-sharing network that the 30-second commercial’s comment section was disabled only a day after the ad was posted.

According to Adweek, the commercial’s YouTube comments section was filled with references to Nazi, “troglodytes” and “racial genocide” before the commenting was disabled.

One Cheerios love wasn’t discouraged by the racist backlash. Actress Whitney Avalon tweeted that she was “proud to play the mom in this adorable new @Cheerios commercial!”

In the Cheerios commercial, a bi-racial girl asks her white mother about the heart healthy benefits of Cheerios. When the girl’s mom confirms that Cheerios are indeed healthy for the heart, the commercial cuts to her African-American father who finds a bunch of cheerios on his heart after waking up from a nap.

Americans are frequently reminded how far this country has come since the days of segregation, but every once in a while a few people remind the nation that racism still exists. Fortunately, Cheerios is a company that celebrates diversity. The company has reportedly refused to pull the ad over racist backlash.

“Consumers have responded positively to our new Cheerios ad. At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families and we celebrate them all,” Camille Gibson, Cheerios’ vice president of marketing, told Gawker.
