With five contestants remaining on ABC’s extravagant reality competition “Dancing with the Stars” and only a few weeks to go before the spring television season wraps up, things are getting down to the wire. So when Karina Smirnoff, one of the show’s seasoned pros and the partner of Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones, narrowly avoided serious injury in practice this past weekend, it was a gift from the dancing gods.

Smirnoff, who has been performing on “Dancing with the Stars” for several years now–she won the 13th season with soap opera star J.R. Martinez–was rushed to the hospital on Sunday afternoon after a botched flip move left her with a twisted neck, possible whiplash, and a potentially dislocated jaw.

According to People magazine, the tumble served as quite a scare for both the dancer and her NFL partner.

“I was flying over Jacoby and I didn’t get down enough so I landed right on my jaw,” she said. “I tried to get up and I couldn’t. That scared me.”

Jones also reiterated the sudden worry of the moment, expressing concern for his partner and dance mentor.

“I’m more worried about that than this dance,” he said.

Luckily, Smirnoff’s injuries were not serious: in a message the dancer relayed to fans via Twitter on Monday afternoon, Smirnoff admitted that the effects of the fall hadn’t entirely worn off, but that she wasn’t going to sacrifice the important Monday evening dance-off regardless.

“Hey guys! I did go2 the hospital +am still a bit sore but I’m going 2 b ok+ not dancing isn’t an option. Excited4 2night +LOVE our dances,” Smirnoff tweeted.

Based on their display on Monday night’s show, Smirnoff and Jones needn’t have worried: the couple were one of three pairs to earn perfect scores–stars Kellie Pickler (a former American Idol contestant) and Aly Raisman (an Olympic gymnast) also impressed judges enough to grab spotless 30-point ratings–and Jones concluded the episode tied with Raisman at the top of the leaderboard.
Disney actress Zendaya Coleman and soap star Ingo Rademaker round out the top five, one of whom will be sent packing on Tuesday’s results show. According to ABC News, Tuesday also marks the program’s 300th episode, a milestone that the network will certainly make sure to mark.
