Zach Braff’s Kickstarter project reaches $2 million goal for ‘Garden State’ follow-up

Would you contribute money toward Zach Braff's new movie?

“Scrubs” actor Zach Braff’s Kickstarter project has reached $2 million in three days. The purpose of Braff’s Kickstarter project is to raise money for a follow-up to “Garden State.” Braff’s new movie is called “Wish I Was Here.”

According to The Associated Press, Braff’s success using Kickstarter comes shortly after Rob Thomas turned to Kickstarter to fund a movie of the TV series “Veronica Mars.” Thomas reportedly raised $2 million in less than 24 hours and nearly $6 million in a month.

“Wish I Was Here” has more than 29,000 backers on Kickstarter and with 26 days to go before the opportunity to fund Braff’s project ends, the movie could pull in hundreds of thousands, if not millions, more. With the minimum contribution set at a $1, the price of funding Braff’s movie is extremely affordable.

Not only does contributing to the actor’s follow-up to “Garden State” mean that you could have a hand in getting the movie on the big screen, but Braff has promised to keep contributors informed about the filming process.

Anyone who contributes $10 or more will have access to his Production Diary, which will include videos memes discussing the process of making the movie. While there are plenty of levels of support, one person who pledged $10,000 will get to appear in “Wish I Was Here” and say a line written by Braff.

After hitting his $2 million funding goal, Braff took to Twitter to thank his fans. “I wish I could hug each and every one of you,” the actor and director tweeted Friday.

Since launching in 2009, Kickstarter has funded more than 40,000 creative projects. In fact, 3.9 million people have pledged over $585 million to the projects, which are each individually created.

Did you like “Garden State?” Would you watch a follow-up to the movie? Will Braff and Thomas’ success using Kickstarter convince others to turn to the crowdsourcing model for movie productions? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
