Hindu leaders call on Selena Gomez to apologize for wearing bindi

Gomez faces calls for an apology.

When Selena Gomez sang her new single “Come & Get It” at the MTV Movie Awards last weekend, her performance and attire were Bollywood-inspired — and were also upsetting to some Hindu religious leaders.

According to the New York Daily News, leaders at the Universal Society of Hinduism have criticized Gomez, calling her “culturally insensitive” for wearing a sparkling bindi — a Hindu religious ornament — on her head during the performance. They have demanded that the 20-year-old apologize and “become more educated in world religious practices and traditions.”

“The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance. It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol,” Hindu statesman Rajan Zed told WENN, adding, “It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed. Selena should apologize and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions.”

Reaction to Gomez’s bindi was equally harsh on Twitter, with one user commenting “deal Selena Gomez the bindi is not just some fashion accessory you can throw on, cultural appropriation man” and another tweeting “Selena Gomez, take that bindi off your head, cultural appropriation is not cute. And neither is your singing.”

Before the performance, Gomez told MTV News that her costume would be “glam tribal” in keeping with the song’s vibe.

“The whole record kind of has a world feel to it in a way. It’s very European and has a lot of island-y sounds,” she said, adding, “It’s got a cool vibe to it, so we’re applying it to the performance and even the tour and for future things we want to do and for this kick-off performance.”

The Times of India pointed out that the bindi wasn’t Gomez’s only nod to “traditional Indian motifs” during Sunday’s performance — it opened “with a man singing in Punjabi along with tabla percussions,” and Gomez was barefoot while performing “classic Indian dance moves.”

Despite the uproar, Gomez wore a bindi again — although she did away with the red Bollywood dress she wore Sunday — on Tuesday while performing “Come & Get It” on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

Should Gomez apologize for wearing the bindi? Is this much ado about nothing? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
