Photos of a man resembling Yankee kissing another man turned up on the internet Wednesday.
Reggaeton king Daddy Yankee is not gay, according to the singer’s publicist. The Los Angeles Times reports that the offices of Nevarez Communications and Perfect Partners in Florida released a statement that rumors circulated in the media about Yankee’s sexual orientation are “falsely written.”
“Online blogs and social media are once again to blame for the spread of false news reports,” said Mayna Nevarez, president of Nevarez Communications.
Prior to the release of this statement, Spanish-language media outlets and blogs were having a field day discussing Yankee’s sexual orientation. Born Ramon Ayala, the “Gasolina” singer is known for his macho stage presence.
According to the LA Times, knowing which media reports were true and which were false has been exhaustive process for those curious about the drama. The LA Times notes that some reports say that Yankee issued a statement following the surfacing of the photos and acknowledged that he is gay.
Other reports, however, say that Yankee held a press conference to dismiss the rumor. “The Internet is where the lies become truth and truth becomes myth,” Ramon is reported to have said.
The LA Times says that the source of all this speculation is a press conference in which the Reggaeton king was asked his opinion on gay marriage. In Spanish, Yankee said that he respects homosexuals but that he believes gay marriage is a matter for government and religious figures to contemplate.
According to MTV’s RapFix, Yankee himself hasn’t discussed the rumors. However, the singer tweeted an Albert Einstein quote about the downfalls of technology. The quote, which was tweeted in Spanish, is loosely translated to “I fear the day in which the technology exceeded our humanity. The world will have a generation of idiots.”
