Frank Ocean forgives Chris Brown for sucker-punch in the face

Frank Ocean will not assault press charges against Chris Brown.

It takes a real man to forgive another man for sucker-punching him right in the face, but that is exactly what Frank Ocean plans to do with Chris Brown. Ocean said Saturday that he had no plans to press charges against the singer, after the two brawled last Sunday in front of a West Hollywood recording studio.

“As a child I thought if someone jumped me it would result in me murdering or mutilating a man,” Ocean wrote on his Tumblr page. “But as a man I am not a killer.”

“I’ll choose sanity,” he continued. “No criminal charges. No civil lawsuit. Forgiveness, albeit difficult, is wisdom. peace, albeit trite, is what I want in my short life. Peace.”

The news follows initial reports that the singer-songwriter, who began his career as a ghostwriter for artists like Justin Bieber, John Legend and Brandy, planned to press charges against Brown.

Accounts differ as to what started the fight in the first place. Some say that Ocean refused to shake Brown’s hand, instead laughing at the attempt. Others claim the two were going for the same parking spot, and things escalated when they stepped out of their vehicles.

What witnesses do tend to agree on is that Brown threw the first punch. This comes as no major surprise for those familiar with the hotheaded star, who reportedly got into a fist fight with singer Drake at a New York nightclub last summer, and is still on probation for assaulting girlfriend Rihanna in L.A. on the night before the 2009 Grammys.

Deputies were called into the recording studio on the 7200 block of Santa Monica Boulevard after the sparring posses came into the studio itself, destroying equipment and frightening the employees.

The parties were separated after the brief fistfight, and Brown and his entourage booked it before authorities arrived on the scene. Ocean stayed behind to talk to the County Sheriff, who later reported that he was “desirous of prosecution in this incident.”

Ocean is preparing to perform at next Sunday’s Grammys, and tweeted “cut my finger now I can’t play w/two hands at the Grammys.” Ocean later added in a separate tweet that he “got jumped by chris and a couple guys.”

For his part, Brown was recently spotted with a hard cast on his right hand, probably courtesy of Ocean’s jaw. The ‘International Love’ singer should be grateful, since he most likely would have faced additional sanctions tied to his 2009 assault conviction, had prosecutors pursued the case further.

Whether or not authorities decide to press charges even without Ocean’s prompting remains to be seen.
