Frank Ocean forgives Chris Brown for recording studio assault

Frank Ocean takes the high road.

After a highly-publicized brawl with Chris Brown at a West Hollywood recording studio, singer-songwriter Frank Ocean has declared that he will not be pressing charges.

Last Sunday, it was reported that Ocean and hip-hop star Brown fought over a parking spot at Westlake Recording Studios, culminating in a punch being thrown at Brown and four other men becoming involved in the ensuing melee. At the time, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told the press that Brown had been named in a battery report and Ocean intended to move forward with the case.

Although the Sheriff’s department also released recent statements that they were “investigating” the incident and determining whether it “[rose] to the level of an alleged assault,” Ocean has put to rest any rumors of his taking legal action against Brown. Witnesses told Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies that Brown punched someone during an argument over a parking space.

In a message to fans, Ocean wrote, “I’m an artist and a modern person…No criminal charges. No civil lawsuit.” He also explained his choice to avoid future bad blood: “Forgiveness, albeit difficult, is wisdom. Peace, albeit trite, is what I want in my short life.” The post appeared on his Tumblr page on Saturday.

Though he had tweeted on the night of the incident last Sunday that Brown had “jumped” him, Ocean now appears to want to avoid public conflict. He and Brown are slated to appear at the Grammy Awards on February 10; both are nominated for top prizes and Ocean is scheduled to perform during the ceremony.

This is not the first time that Brown has sullied his image with accusations of violent assault. The young star infamously beat then-girlfriend Rihanna in a vehicle en route to the 2009 Grammys, with police photos of her injuries appearing on news websites around the world within days. The episode cast a pall on Brown’s career and drew the ire of numerous celebrities and hip-hop legends, including Jay-Z.

Ocean is also no stranger to unwelcome publicity: he revealed his homosexuality last year in a Tumblr post, creating a stir in the music world and starting a national conversation about the limited presence of gay hip-hop artists.

Though Ocean undoubtedly comes out on the rosier side of the recording studio incident, he did express frustration with Brown’s actions. “As a child I thought if someone jumped me it would result in me murdering or mutilating a man,” he wrote. Perhaps in light of Brown’s history and the negative overexposure that violence can bring upon a public figure, Ocean has chosen to take the high road.
