Destiny’s Child going ‘Nuclear’ for Superbowl 2013

Destiny’s Child going ‘Nuclear’ for Superbowl 2013

Destiny's Child is back with a new album due January 29.

Remember awkwardly dancing to songs like ‘Waterfalls’, ‘Say My Name’ and ‘Bootylicious’ in middle school? Well Destiny’s Child is back, and just released a new single, ‘Nuclear’.

Though we haven’t heard from them for a while, the trio never officially broke up. In 2005 after releasing their fourth studio album, ‘Destiny Fulfilled’, the girls decided to take a break and pursue other things. “No matter what happens, we will always love each other as friends and sisters and will always support each other as artists,” the group said in a statement at the time.

Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland certainly made good use of the intervening time, with Knowles seldom leaving the spotlight and Rowland releasing number-one hit “When Love Takes Over” with French DJ David Guetta in 2009. Third group member Michelle Williams, meanwhile, has been relatively quiet since releasing 2008’s single “We Break the Dawn” on her solo pop album ‘Unexpected’.

Now all three stars have reunited to create the album ‘Love Songs’, produced by Pharrell Williams and due out January 29. The single ‘Nuclear’ has already been released, and suggests a promising return to their soulful, R&B roots.

In addition, sources recently confirmed that Destiny’s Child will be headlining this year’s Super Bowl halftime performance in New Orleans on February 3. From their newest releases to old anthems like “Survivor” and “Jumpin’ Jumpin'”, they will have plenty of material to fill the stadium– and bring a nostalgic smile to listeners across the country.

Beyoncé is looking at a big year in 2013. Not only will she perform at Obama’s inauguration on January 21 and the Super Bowl two weeks later, but she will release a highly anticipated autobiopic called ‘Beyonce’s Life Is But A Dream’ on HBO within the next few months. Knowles and husband Jay-Z also recently bought a lavish $1 million nursery in New York’s Barclay’s Center for daughter Blue Ivy, who just celebrated her first birthday.

Destiny’s Child is one of the world’s best-selling girl groups of all time, selling 50 million records worldwide and earning numerous achievements– including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with Destiny’s Child, four Grammy Awards, and two Billboard Music Awards.

The group started in 1990 as Girl’s Tyme out of Houston Texas, with Knowles, Rowland, LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett. After several years of limited success, Columbia Records signed them on as Destiny’s Child. The group did not achieve mainstream recognition until releasing their second album ‘The Writing’s on the Wall’, which featured number-one singles “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name”.

Some have compared Destiny’s Child to The Supremes, a group of female singers popular in the 1960s, likening Knowles to Supremes frontwoman Diana Ross. In 2006 Beyoncé starred in the critically-acclaimed film ‘Dreamgirls’, an adaptation of the 1981 musical of the same name originally based on the Supremes.

Perhaps the ladies’ most impressive achievement is staying together as long as they have. Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland have worked together for 12 years since the group’s beginnings in 1991, and Williams has been part of the trio since 2000.

“We have a good time together, and I think that’s the most important thing,” Kelly Rowland told MTV News in August. “We don’t want to scratch each other’s eyes out; we love each other too much.”
