Vice President Joe Biden to make cameo on NBC’s ‘Parks and Recreation’

Vice President Joe Biden to join Senator John McCain on list of politicians who have made appearances on NBC's "Parks and Recreation."

Vice President Joe Biden, who won a second term as vice president Tuesday night, will make a cameo on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation.” Fox News reports that Mr. Biden’s appearance on the popular TV show will take place on next week’s November 15 episode.

“This could have been awkward,” writes FoxNews.com. According to Entertainment Weekly, the vice president filmed his cameo on the NBC comedy show back in July when show was filming in the nation’s capital. Imagine the irony of his appearance if he and President Barack Obama had failed to win reelection in the 2012 presidential race.

Michael Schur, the executive producer of “Parks and Recreation,” told The New York Times that everyone involved in the filming of the vice president’s cameo was sworn to secrecy. If news of Mr. Biden’s appearance were to be leaked, the network was told that special arrangements would have to be made to give Republican vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan a chance to appear on the show.

“It was all very byzantine and complicated,” Mr. Schur said. “There seem to be all kinds of specific rules, which I never fully understood. But we decided to err on the side of caution.”

Mr. Schur notes that Mr. Biden’s appearance plays off of Leslie Knope’s undying admiration for the vice president.

“Our first joke way back had Leslie telling her friend Ann that her ideal man would have the brain of George Clooney and the body of Joe Biden,” Mr. Schur said. “For whatever reason, she has an irresistible attraction to the vice president in a movie-star kind of way.”

Vice President Biden is not the first Washington D.C. politician to appear on “Parks and Recreation.” Arizona Senator John McCain made a cameo on the hit show back in September. Like the vice president, Mr. McCain made an appearance as himself on the NBC comedy show.

“It’s one of my favorite shows … I’m a fan, it’s hilarious,” the Arizona Republican said in a video released by NBC. “The whole schtick about an election, and being elected and now coming to Washington. And of course, Amy is such a talented actress. My experience with her goes back to hosting ‘Saturday Night Live’ a long time ago.”

The critically-acclaimed show, which has struggled in the ratings, follows Leslie Knope (played by former SNL star Amy Poehler) as she navigates the political challenges of local government in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana.

“It’s really a very clever plot, and very entertaining … Listen, I spend a lot of time with local elected officials from my state, they come because they need the assistance and the federal largess that we are able to help them with,” Senator McCain added.

Mr. Biden, like Senator McCain, is a huge fan of “Parks and Recreation,” noting in a comment e-mailed to The New York Times by Biden staffer Kendra Barkoff that his whole family watches the show.

“I had a great time filming that scene. It was a real honor that in my sitcom debut I got to meet someone like Leslie Knope, who believes so deeply in public service. She’s an example for men and women across the country that there’s no higher calling than helping other people. On a personal note, I’ll never figure out how Leslie Knope got my home phone number, but that really just shows how committed she is,” he said.
