The Virginia election results are starting to roll in and it appears that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has the advantage over President Barack Obama for the time being. With 10.8 percent of voting precincts reporting, Mr. Romney leads the president with 58.4 percent of the votes. President Obama, on the other hand, has 40.4 percent of the votes.

The Virginia election results are extremely important to monitor, as the state is considered a swing state in the 2012 presidential election. Both candidates have regions of strength in the Old Dominion State but experts say that Prince William and Loudoun Counties may be key to the outcome of the election.

WJLA’s Kendis Gibson notes that if President Obama wins these counties, like he did during the 2008 presidential election, it’s extremely likely that he’ll defeat his Republican challenger.

“I’d like to think that a lot of things that we do would be based on a lot of good thinking, prayer, lot of seeking great wisdom,” said Mike Trivett of Loudoun County, according to WJLA. “And if the rest of the nation is following that’d be great.”

At the moment, voting precincts in neither Loudoun nor Prince William Counties are not reporting results.

Both candidates spent the last weekend of their campaigns, campaigning in Virginia. Former President Bill Clinton joined Barack Obama at a large rally Saturday in northern Virginia, where the presidential race could be decided.

“He has been traveling all across the country for this campaign. He’s been laying out the stakes so well that our team basically calls him the ‘Secretary of Explaining Stuff,'” Mr. Obama said about the former president, according to NBC News. “He was a great president; he has been a great friend.”

Governor Romney campaigned at the Virginia Aviation in Lynchburg, Virginia, visiting the Old Dominion State for the third time in five days.

“I also want to thank many of you in this crowd that have been out there working on the campaign. Making calls from the victory centers, and by putting up a yard sign, in your neighbor’s yard,” Mr. Romney said, according to The Los Angeles Times. “And maybe convincing a co-worker to vote for Paul Ryan and me. And now, let’s make sure that we get everyone we know out to vote on Tuesday.  Every single voter — get ’em out!”

Virginia is also ground zero for a hotly contested Senate race. At the moment, Republican George Allen leads with 50.8 percent of the votes to Democrat Tim Kaine’s 49.2 percent of the votes. There is no race for governor in the state of Virginia in 2012.

Thirteen electoral votes are up for grabs in the Old Dominion State.
