Obama on his iPod playlist: ‘You’ve got to mix it up’

President Barack Obama says that his iPod contains music from rappers Jay-Z and Eminem.

We all love finding out what our favorite celebrity listens to on his or her iPod but it isn’t everyday that the president of the United States reveals what’s on his playlist. During an interview Monday on Cincinnati radio station WIZF, President Obama talked about his music tastes. It turns out that the music on the president’s iPod could just about appeal to every voter demographic in the country.

“I’ve got old school – Stevie Wonder, James Brown. I’ve got Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan,” the president told WIZF’s E.J. Greig. “And then I’ve got everything from Jay-Z, to Eminem, to the Fugees, to you name it. There’s probably not a group that you play that I don’t have on my iPod.”

Numerous artists have performed at the White House during the president’s first term in the Oval Office. Pop star Justin Bieber performed at the White House Easter Egg Roll. “I’m at the WHITE HOUSE!!!” Mr. Bieber tweeted during the event. Mr. Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama also welcomed Stevie Wonder, Jamie Foxx, Smoky Robinson, Jamie Wonder, John Legend, Seal, Sheryl Crow, Nick Jonas and Jordin Sparks to the White House as part of a tribute to Motown.

“I’ve got some jazz – John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Gil Scott-Heron,” Mr. Obama said. “You’ve got to mix it up. It just depends on what mood I’m in.”

Country and heavy metal are the only two genres of music that are conspicuously absent from Mr. Obama’s iPod playlist.

The fact that Jay-Z’s music is on Mr. Obama’s playlist should come as no surprise, as the rapper and his wife, Beyonce Knowles, are big fans of the president. In a public letter to Mrs. Obama earlier this year, Beyonce called the first lady “the ultimate example of a truly strong African American woman.”

Written shortly after giving birth to her own daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, Beyonce said the first lady was a role model for families everywhere. “She builds and nurtures her family, while also looking out for so many millions in so many ways,” Beyonce wrote.

Beyonce’s husband, Jay-Z, is also a huge fan of the commander-in-chief. In September, the rapper and his wife hosted a fundraiser for the president at Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club in Manhattan. The Huffington Post reports that tickets for the event cost $40,000 each.

“Jay knows what my life is like,” Mr. Obama said, as Jay-Z and Beyonce listened from the front row of the nightclub. “We both have daughters and our wives are more popular than we are.”

While a candidate’s iPod playlist is unlikely to be an accurate predictor of how he’ll perform in the November 6 eleciton, we can be sure that all of the artists on the president’s playlist have just gained a few extra fans.
