1 dead, 4 injured after ice cave collapses in Washington state

Officials had warned that the popular caves were dangerous due to recent unseasonably warm temperatures.

A person is dead and at least four others are injured after an ice cave that is popular with tourists in Washington state partially collapsed.

Authorities had previously warned that the caves — often known as the Big Four Ice Caves — had become dangerous because of the unseasonably warm temperatures, according to an Associated Press report.

Three of the injured were sent to the Seattle trauma center. Among them is a 25-year-old man who is listed as in critical condition. A 35-year-old man and 35-year-old woman were also seriously injured, but were in satisfactory condition, according to a hospital spokesman as stated in the report. Injuries include cuts and bone fractures.

The fourth injured victim was a young girl who experience minor injuries and was sent to a hospital in Everett.

As a result of the collapse, the ice caves have been closed until further notice, the report states.

The caves, situated about 70 miles northeast of Seattle, draw lots of hikers to gawk at them, but with temperatures soaring into the 80s on Monday, authorities were concerned about their condition, leading to the placement of warning signs to indicate the dangers.

Just the day before, a hiker took video of a portion of the caves collapsing, with several tourists inside the cave during the collapse who escaped injury.

An 11-year-old girl was killed back in July 2010 after a chunk of ice struck her, although she never actually entered the caves.
