The trailer for “Daddy’s Home,” Will Ferrell’s new comedy also starring Mark Wahlberg, has been released a few months in advance of its Christmas Day opening, and for those who attended a New Orleans Pelicans basketball game in January, they may recognize one scene in particular.
Will Ferrell was invited onto the court at halftime to make a shot, and instead spends his time drunkenly talking about his kids until the announcer suggests finding someone else. But Ferrell’s character persists, and eventually winds up with a shot only to drill one of the cheerleaders — a professional stunt woman — in the face, calling her to fall to the floor and actors posing as security guards to flood into the arena, chasing down Ferrell as he attempted another shot before hauling him off.
Surprisingly, not everyone in the stands seemed to be in on the joke, reacting with shock to the incident.
The video went viral, with some decrying his behavior not realizing it was a scene for a movie. Ferrell said that some people even wanted him sued, according to a New Magazine report. He added that they didn’t realize it was a paid professional stunt woman who had taken the hit with the practice ball.
It was certainly a tight time frame they had to work with, having only six minutes to get the scene right. Ferrell called the crowd “amazing,” and that they were just told that he would try to make a half-court shot.
Wahlberg, his co-star, was also sitting courtside as part of the scene and said that when the cheerleader fell to the floor, “people were shocked,” and that a lot of the fans “thought it was real, they thought it was a real ball.”
