Is Android Pay about to kick Apple Pay out of the market?

Android Pay and Android M will be released at the same time later this year -- and it will mean a big shakeup for the market.

More details are coming out about Android Pay, and it’s got many customers excited about an alternative to the Apple Pay platform as the mobile payment wars heat up.

At Google’s I/O developers conference this week, the search giant announced that Android Pay would debut along with Android M in the third quarter, a huge announcement that is certain to shake up a market that already has big entries from Apple and Samsung, according to a V3.co.uk report.

Android Pay will be able to work with any Android-equipped smartphone that has NFC already in it, and seven out of 10 Android devices will be ready for Pay once it launches, according to the company. Most Android phones do have NFC built in, including the Galaxy S6, HTC One M9, and LG G4.

Google is attempting to beat Apple Pay by announcing that smartphone users will be able to purchase goods in-app with it, which means you won’t have to enter your credit card information and your shipping address every time you make an online purchase. Users will be able to simply choose “Buy with Android Pay.” Dominoes, Etsy, Uber, and Groupon will be among the first that will allow Android Pay to be used in their apps.

Google is also attempting to beat Apple when it comes to how many U.S. retailers will support it at the start, boasting triple the number of retailers the Apple had at launch.

Android Pay will also work with devices the run Android 4.4 Kitkat and above, a surprise to many who attended the I/O keynote.

And one final feature of Android Pay actually had more to do with Android M: the operating system will have native fingerprint authentication, which will also allow users to unlock Android Pay in a more secure fashion to prevent unauthorized purchases.
