Snoop Dogg time travels with Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams in ‘California Roll’ video

Snoop Dogg enlisted Stevie Wonder and Pharrell Williams to take viewers through time in his new video for California Roll. This is Snoop Dogg’s latest single from his new album Bush.

The video begins with people filing into a movie theater in 1946. As the audience members take their seats, a robot comes out from behind the curtains and claims to be a pilot who will be taking the audience on a journey to the future.

The members, including the video’s leading lady Nia Long, buckle up for one smooth ride. The theater scene turns to a black screen, and Pharrell appears in a long fancy robe while Wonder appears with a glistening pyramid ready to croon. And the stunning visuals match the smooth track and accentuate Wonder’s harmonic skills.

The video shows viewers what California will look like in the future. Apparently Snoop, along with Wonder and many others, will be flying through the air in yellow convertibles and Hollywood Hills will be loaded with pyramids.

In an interview with Noisey, the California Roll video director Warren Fu explained the concept behind the video, as reported by Rolling Stone. Fu said that he was aiming for “event video vibes” since their were three prominent artists involved.

He said he wanted to create a video that was a “think like when [Michael Jackson] would shut down prime time for his premieres.” He added that it was Pharrell’s idea to mix Egyptian and futuristic elements, and it was Snoop Dogg’s idea to make the ride take place in the 1940s. This way, they were traveling into the future. Fu had originally planned to create a spinoff of Star Tours.

Snoop Dogg’s new album is available now. He said he created it with Pharrell by his side from “top to bottom.” Snoop also said that the album is “completely different than anything we’ve ever done. It sounds good, feels good, looks good.”
