Hidden cameras catch roommate spitting, spraying window cleaner in food

Thy young woman had fought with her roommates about leaving their apartment.

A University of South Carolina student has been arrested after her suspicious roommates set up a hidden camera and caught her spitting in and adding window cleaner to their food.

According to police reports, 22-year-old Hayley King had been involved in several arguments with her roommates after she refused to vacate their off-campus apartment. They chose to set up the camera out of fear of what she was doing while they were not home, according to an incident report, and caught the young woman tampering with their food.

A specific motive for the revolting acts committed by King remains unclear.

Columbia police say there is video footage from February of King removing several containers of food from a refrigerator in February and either spitting or pouring window cleaner into them. The footage shows King going about the behavior unhurriedly and casually, clearly taking her time.

Apparently one of the roommates ate from one of the containers before seeing the video.

Police arrested King on February 9 after her roommates — who reportedly were trying to get King to move out — showed authorities the video.

After viewing the video, police summoned King for an interview where she eventually confessed to the incident, according to the report. The student was released one day after her arrest on a $5,000 personal recognizance, according to public court records.

King is charged with unlawful, malicious tampering with human drug product or food. If convicted, the young woman might face up to 20 years in prison on a Class C felony charge.

Her lawyer failed to respond to a request for comment. The roommates have also not issued any additional statements at this time.
